Deterioration of reinforced concrete wharves in marine environment : case study

Reinforced concrete wharves in marine environment, some of them with 20 years old and one with more than 50 years old, exhibite nowadays different degrees of deterioration.
A survey of the wharves was carried out in order to identify the extension, causes and mechanisms responsible for the observed deterioration and to propose some measures to repair and maintain the structures.
The assessment was done by means of in-situ and in-lab tests. Tests results of chlorides and sulfates penetration, half-cell ptentials and corrosion currents measurements are presented here. Based on these tests results and on the visual inspections, zones in the structures with different degrees of deterioration were defined.
Repairing measures were proposed for the different structural elements of the 50 years wharf with severe deterioration. For the younger structures, where no degadation is visible yet, measures for maintenance were also proposed.
